For the international press, Mexico City has become something akin to the bearded lady at the circus, commanding our curious fascination with all its flaws. News reports talk about pollution, precarity, earthquakes, intestinal threats and the questionable folklore of our salsas. And yet, we cannot sever our umbilical cord with Mexico (whose likely etymology is ‘navel of the moon’) […] We swear daily to abandon it, and yet every day we give ourselves up to its embrace; it is the unrenounceable company we deserve. Let others live in their citadels of order and congenial transit. We crave the complex character and ambiguous beauty of this bearded woman.
