The Lupines Have Come Early This Year

Rain clouds blanket the Downtown skyline

With all the rain we have received over the past few days, it seemed like a prime opportunity to see what new plants may be gracing our park. A short hike through the park revealed one of our favorite wildflowers has already started to bloom, the Arroyo Lupine! Although the Lupines have not fully developed; it fun to imagine the sea of purple that will blanket our park come March. So if you are jonesing for some wildflowers, now you know where to start.

Dog Of The Week

Over the weekend, L.A. State Historic Park played host to New Belgium Brewery’s Tour de Fat. The event brought many a smiling face as well as a few wagging tails. What better time then to find a Dog of the week? With that, we bring you Kaya, a 12 year old black lab who happily obliged her dancing partner during the set of the March Fourth Marching Band. She loved the park and even though everyone around her was cutting lose, she still kept her leash on.

Giant Cat…..er Giant Tomato Hornworm!

This Tomato Hornworm was hanging out behind our building, here in the park, munching on one of our tomato plants. Quite a fine looking specimen. It also enjoys snacking on other plants in the Nightshade family including eggplant, pepper, tobacco, moon flowers and potato.

Tour de Fat Coming This Weekend

We are very excited to be hosting New Belgium Brewery’s Tour de Fat this coming Saturday. This is their 12th of thirteen stops that have taken them all over the western states, with all proceeds raised throughout the tour, going to local bicycle non-profits fostering awareness for bike everywhere.

The days events will consist of a bicycle ride starting here at the park, meandering through downtown and returning back to the park, live music from the likes of March Forth Marching Band and The Dovekins, New Belgian’s signature brews and you can even trade you car in for a brand new bike!

Although there will be alcohol at this event, it is very family friendly and best of all is FREE! To register for the bike parade, get to the park between 10:00am and 11:00am. If this bike parade is not your cup of tea then get here any time after 12:00pm and enjoy the festivities. The event will end at 5:00pm. For more information check out their website here; Tour de Fat.

Orb-Weaver?

Caught a glimpse of this spider the other mourning in front our office at the north end of the park. Can anyone chime in with the correct name for this arachnid? Thanks very much!

Sunset Campfire Wrap up

Many thanks to all the people who were able to attend our last Summer Sunset Campfire for the 2010 season. We had a great turnout of eager participants who sang songs, learned about the Los Angeles River, and of course munched on many a roasted marshmallow. Campfires will resume in April of 2011, but until then keep checking the blog for other fun upcoming events.
